Before Day 1

Day 1
Trauma Informed Case Conceptualization and Treatment Planning
  • Overview of Trauma and PTSD
  • Understanding the trauma-related meaning of presenting behavior and symptoms
  • Meaning of Behavior Exercise
  • Introduction to the Fairy Tale Model
  • Core principles of trauma-informed treatment
LUNCH
  • Goals of Evaluation Phase
  • Conducting a trauma/loss history interview (practice)
  • Trauma-informed case formulation
  • Enhancing motivation and commitment to treatment goals
  • Treatment planning and contracting

Day 2
Intro to EMDR and Phase 2: Client Preparation 
  • Description of the procedure, lit review, theories
  • Integrating EMDR within a comprehensive trauma-informed treatment approach
  • EMDR's 8 Phase Protocol
  • Phase 2: Preparation (safety, coping skills, strength building)
  • Practice safe place visualization and resource development/installation
LUNCH
  • Supervised practice with imaginal rehearsal of coping strategies
  • Case Consultation: Preparing current cases for EMDR therapy

(Interval of several weeks to allow for preparation with clients)

Day 3
Basic Protocol and Skills: Phases 3-5
​Target Assessment, Desensitization, and Installation
  • EMDR-specific preparations and cautions; 
legal & ethical issues
  • Introducing EMDR to clients
  •  Strategies for target selection
  • Supervised practice with eye movements and alternatives
  • Supervised practice/demo with “stop” signal and with installation of “safety device”
LUNCH
  • Supervised practice with target assessment/set-up
  • Procedures for Desensitization & Installation
  • Supervised practice with EMDR protocol, through Installation.

Day 4
Adding Phases 6 and 7, Body Scan & Closure
  • Problem-solving strategies for EMDR sessions
  • Simple Protocol Variations
  • Phase 6 Body Scan
  • Phase 7 Closure
  •  Supervised practice with EMDR protocol
LUNCH
  • More Supervised Practice of EMDR

Day 5
Intermediate Applications and Skills
  • Phase 8: Re-evaluation
  • Troubleshooting
  • Recent Events Protocol
  • 3-pronged approach (past, present, future) 
  • Applying a phase model of trauma informed treatment to a wide range of presenting problems
  • Using the Float Back Technique
  •  Keeping wayward sessions under control
  • Indicators of dissociation and strategies to manage dissociation
LUNCH
  •  Supervised practice with EMDR protocol

Day 6
Intermediate Applications and Skills: Cognitive Interweave, Specialty Applications
  • Advanced strategies for problem-solving an EMDR session
  • Cognitive Interweave
  • Supervised practice with EMDR protocol, to include cognitive interweaves
LUNCH
  • Using EMDR with children/adolescents
  • Information on Resources
  • Case consultation, identifying readiness for EMDR

Group Consultation 
  • Group consultation, discussion of cases, problems, questions
