Training and Experience

Heidi Tippett is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University.  Heidi has been working with children (4+), adolescents and families for 30+ years in a variety of settings.  She has lived and worked in the Fredericksburg area since 1995 and she currently works part-time as a school social worker for Spotsylvania County Public Schools. Heidi enjoys individual, group and family work and believes in the importance of collaboration, when appropriate.

Heidi has extensive experience working with clients who are experiencing concerns related to adoption, grief, family stress, attachment, and trauma. For the past 10 years she has been working to help families and students address issues that impact access to education such as learning disabilities, depression and mood disorders, anxiety, and ADHD. Heidi has significant experience working with students and adults who have immigrated to the United States and with clients who are exploring LGBTQIA issues and concerns.

Heidi’s work with children under 10 typically has a caregiver component. Active parent involvement is a requirement for any attachment-based services. Heidi enjoys working with caregivers to develop parenting strategies that meet the specific needs of their children. She works with non-cohabiting parents on ways to improve co-parenting.

Heidi is currently seeing clients on Thursdays and Fridays.

Therapeutic Approach

Heidi’s treatment approach focuses on understanding the unique needs of each client/family and creating a plan to reach identified goals. Heidi works with clients to uncover root causes, cognitive distortions, and patterns of learned/adapted behaviors that are impeding growth and symptom relief. Heidi's approach is integrative, drawing deeply from Attachment and Family Systems Theory. She incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, problem solving therapy, and motivational interviewing. Heidi is a TF-CBT trained therapist.  She uses play-based therapy, expressive therapies, and mindfulness techniques.
